Gaze

Gaze - In theories of the visual arts, such as film theory and art history, the gaze is a term used to describe acts of looking caught up in dynamics of desire — for example, the gaze can be motivated by a desire for control over its object. Theories of gaze have explored the complex power relation that are a part of the acts of looking and being looked at. (from Practices of Looking by Sturken and Cartwright)
